Description
An original lot of 165 World War Two letters including most of the covers. They were written between 1942- 1946. The correspondence is between Lt. Herbert H Lewin and his wife. Most of the letters are written by Lt. Herbert while he was overseas. When he got shipped overseas, he did not keep any letters from his wife as they were too hard to send home, therefore most of the letters in this lot are written by the soldier. They were sent home to his wife in inPhiladelphia
PA.
Below the excerpts is some information on the soldier in this estate of letters. He wrote many long letters and many interesting facts and history of WW2. He received a Bronze star for participating in the Antisubmarine campaign, was in India and there for the
takeover
of Shanghai, and many other places.....This is a great group of letters that you will not want to miss out in having in your collection, hours upon hours of history and reading.
I did not read all of these letters before having to list them so as I was scanning through them, I pulled some to list some excerpts below:
Excerpts from the letters:
...I don't see why you should be so worried. I don't think by the sound of things here and the outside that they will take mens from the Air Corps and send them for combat duty. .... boys in school are too valuable to them for other things and they have all the drafters and enlisted men in the regular Army for that kind of thing. What they
keep
calling for on the radio that is) are men with any inclination to radio or mechanics for the Air Corps. you see they need you to "keep them flying" ....aren't the one they want to be at the firing end of a gun on a distant territory or even on our own shores.....
....Under the provisions of
War
Department General Orders......Herbert H Lewin, AC Hq & Base Sv Sq this Gp is authorized to wear the Bronze Star on the American Theater Ribbon, for participation in the Antisubmarine Campaign, during the period from 3 May 42 to 18 1942.....
....Two men had been out on a hunt and returned here with a tiger lashed across the front of the jeep. It must have weighed 4 to 500 pounds and had a really beautiful coat. it took them three days to get it but it sure was worth it. I hope to get one for the spot in front of our fireplace.....
....it looks as tho we are not going to operate as a service group in Shanghai but as a depot group getting rid of the equipment in this theater. I have no idea what yours truly is going to do..... I only hope that they will declare me surplus and ship me home to you....Wilson went
though
Shanghai
this morning and I'm willing to be that he gets us into hotter water than we are now. Somehow that guy has a
knack
for getting us the dirty end of the stick. I hope Northup can keep him in his place...
...We arrived here yesterday afternoon (Shanghai)... had to set up our quarts. Russ and I have a large airy room in a big building that two days ago housed J*p officers....It looks as tho this place too was heavily bombed, most of the buildings and the runway have been well beat. You know we have
the
dubious group of being the first U.S. service group to replace a J*p service group. I guess we can be called that. Actually we are directly under Gen. Weslemayer in the occupation of Shanghai. there are still plenty of J*ps around but all of them have been disarmed- whenever they see you a scowl comes over their ugly faces that is hard to describe....
...Tokyo radio is to broadcast to the Japanese Army when the .....out from behind their locked doors. As usual, Russia with her lightning speed is going thru
Manchuria
certainly if the Japanese war lords have any semblance of intellect they will call a halt to what will be the wiping out of a nation.....
...General Wedemeyer's viewpoint is very unpleasant from under his command It seems he thinks it is wonderful that Gen.
Marshall
is going to China because he hopes he will see how much help National China needs-
particularly
military help. ...He also claims that he has orders only to deal with the
Nationalists
. That may be true but it sure ain't right. We are backing another Hitler
Democracy
seems to have fallen in the background. I am really afraid we are heading for more trouble....
....civil situation in
China
Smuggle. Whatever the talk is at home concerning our entering into it or into a war with Russia it might have some basis. And we see it here everything is being done to prohibit any further war on our part. The Commanding General is purely for a "hands off" policy unless there is danger to U.S. life or property and as yet no attempt has been made of any mass attack on any U.S. position. The redeployment of Chinese
troops
to North China he admits is powering the Chinese National Gov't. but he further claims it is not an act of war against the
Communist's
. The commitment for redeployment was originally made so that US troops would not be used as occupational forces in Manchuria and Korea, Marines now stationed there are not as
far
as we know, cut off but are being released from duty there as Chinese replacements move in. ....
....It seems that Army Exchange is setting up in the Shanghai area and yesterday I was in their offices....I returned here to find everything in a turmoil. the mess has to be moved again, cleaning and setting up to go thru base commander....got a wild hair
caught
in his thing.....it seems that the peace is harder to put up with than the war. Today we learned that we won't get home by the first of the new year.....It seems the picture had changed and now the U. S. has said they will transport 2,500,000 J*ps to their homeland- so there it is. I wonder what the J*ps would have done had they won....I had to get some soap and buckets for the mess, from a J*p barracks and when I got there there were no coolies so I got ten J*p officers to load the truck, it was
marvelous
to watch them simmer and boil carrying the stuff out to the truck while several J*p enlisted men looked on. It was fun to give them a taste of some of their own tactics.....
... As I think I have explained our mission here is to facilitate unloading of equipment from the organizations that are heading home, we will dispose of the equipment and then our mission is
completed
....
