Description
Up for auction/sale is an (circa 1900-1910) antique paneled interior shot glass for "Old Hancock, Rye", a whiskey distiller James Hancock of Ludlow, KY.I can't date this shot glass specifically, but from what few references I could find, James Hancock started distilling his whiskey in the mid-later 1890s and began marketing a marketing strategy in the early 1900s. (see For reference only image).
This is the text from the glass:
"A little bit better than need be" (arched text), Old Hancock (arched text), Rye, James Hancock, Distiller, Ludlow KY"
Also, "For reference only", I found an image of an actual Old Hancock Rye whiskey bottle, for those who'd be interested. After quite a bit of research, I found very little more than the words written by himself in the Printer's Ink ad (see images).
The glass is in overall very good condition with a couple minor flea bites on the rim and some light scratches to the surface area, but does show significant wear to the most of upper motto line "
A little bit better than need be
". All of the text is there and legible but highly faded in spots, (see close-up images). The rough overall measurements are 2 1/8" tall, with a 2" rim, and a 1 3/8" lightly weighted base.
I have described this antique shot glass as best I can, but to augment my description I have provided several high-resolution images of the glass from varying angles to allow for a detailed review of quality, condition, and desirability.
This will be packaged with care to best ensure this rarely offered shot glass arrives as pictured and described.
